May 10, 2015 - Mother's Day

It has been 2 weeks since my last entry because I guess I got busy last weekend and forgot to add to the blog!  How in the world could I have done that!!

We have been traveling in and all around the GREAT KENTUCKY LOUISVILLE MISSION for the past two weeks.  We LOVE coming up here....we love the country and we especially love working with President and Sister Brough and their wonderful missionaries. It is NOT a short drive either.....depending on which part of the mission we drive to, it could take us 8 hours to get here (in Indiana).

Mission fotos are just a 'way of Zone Conferences' and Elder/Dr. Allgaier was asked every single conference we attended here to be the official photographer.  But standing on the chair made me a little nervous!

Us Senior Missionaries had our DERBY HATS since we were here during Kentucky Derby time!  How fun is that.

Hermana Butterfield was one of the missionaries we got to meet.  Small world in the church.....she was in Elder Spencer Allgaier's district in the Mexico MTC!!  She had such wonderful things to tell us about him and what a great missionary he is down in Mexico!

Because it was Derby week and because the wonderful Relief Society sisters serve great lunches for the missionaries, they also have such cute centerpieces for the luncheons!

And the missionaries sing THE song as a way of thanking those who prepare and serve lunch....love it when they sing that wonderful song (Called To Serve)!

Yup....the DERBY HAT SISTERS!  L to R:  Sister Brough (Mission President's wife, Sister Bailey (office senior missionary), Sister Hardgrave (AMHA-Area Mental Health Advisor with her husband) and me.

These missionaries had my iPhone to take the foto for me......and they threw in a little selfie just for the fun of it!!

We bought Alex his new scriptures for his Baptism during the middle of the Kentucky trip.  We couldn't be there but we got to see them.....LOVE that we were able to do that!

We drove back to PTC (Peachtree City) during the weekend.  We saw lots of canola fields along the way.  They remind us so much of the beautiful canola fields in our beloved Finland.  We just had to stop at this one and see it up close and personal!

We got to talk to Alex for a quick minute just before the baptism began!!!  So proud of him for making this big decision!  Andy baptized him.

Back at our apartment for 2 days.....and my Apple Watch got delivered!!!!  :-)

The elders who live close to us all gathered around to see my new watch when we got to church on Sunday.  They wanted to touch it and play with it so badly!!

We took a little walk on Sunday afternoon with Elder Barber and Elder Facey to show them the 'animal' hiding in the rocks.  We have noticed this for several months now.  It turned out to be a plastic UGLY animal of some kind and was a GEOCACHE!!!  How fun is that....even if it did scare us to death!

I got another doily made to give to Sister Anderson, Tennessee Nashville Mission President's wife.  We will be seeing them.

I was able to get a couple of pairs of pants repaired for one of the elders.  I got a LOT accomplished while we were home for 2 days!

And it was BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN!!!

This time we started out in LEXINGTON Ky for Zone Conferences.

This is such beautiful horse country.  And the locals are still celebrating the Kentucky Derby!

And the decorations for the luncheons show that Derby theme!

We met another Hermana who served with Elder Spencer Allgaier in the Mexico MTC....Hermana Chantry.

Singing to the sisters again.....THE song!

We were able to swing by the Kentucky Louisville Temple for a quick hour-ish as we headed south toward Tennessee.

We finally got a few minutes to visit the Historic Louisville Kentucky Water Tower!  It was open and we got in for FREE!!!  The folks here were so nice to us!

We spent the weekend in Horse Cave, Kentucky....and attended the Glasgow Ward.  What a great Mother's Day Meeting.  We love the people here.  So just gathered us in and welcomed us so warmly!

Saw two sweet sister missionaries in the ward here who remembered us from Zone Conferences.  I asked them to take a foto (see below) and they took a little selfie of themselves too.  Missionaries love to take selfies!!!  And I love to see them on my camera.

What sweet sisters these two are.  Mother/Daughter....R is Sister Deckard and her married daughter Sherry.  Sherry is going to the temple for the first time later in May (this month).  Her mother is going for only the 2nd time with her daughter (and the last time the mother went was almost 20 years ago!).    What a neat story for their family.

After church today, we drove through the country side back to our hotel.  The Hart County here in Kentucky put together a 'Barn Quilt Trail' to show off their old barns which have been adorned with 'quilts' on the side of them.....the quilts have been painted on light weight aluminum for longevity.  We found 11 of them (plus a cow laying down in a canola field!).  There are about 50 total but we didn't have time to do that much driving.  Next time we are in the area!!!  It was really fun to find them.

At the end of the day, after talking to all of our children and their families, I was able to crochet the last 5 rows of this afghan (for Kara at Becky's office), so it is DONE and ready for mailing as soon as we get back to PTC in 1 1/2 weeks.  I surely enjoy making things with my hands while Elder/Dr. is busy working.

It has been a very FILLED 2-weeks.  We have loved every minute of it.  We are tired.....I think.  We still have 1 1/2 weeks before we will be back to PTC.  Stay tuned!  Love our mission.....
